Teaching Experience
Dr. Westphal has served as a clinician, educator, and researcher during her career as a physical therapist. Her education includes a BS from Montana State University (1974), an MPT from the US Army-Baylor University (1975), and a PhD in Physiology from the University of Kentucky (1986). Her experience as a full-time clinician included approximately ten years spent working as a therapist in three different military medical facilities. After completion of her PhD, she became a faculty member at the US Army-Baylor University Graduate Program in Physical Therapy. During her first four years there, she served as an assistant professor, and as the Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education. During the subsequent two years, she continued as an instructor, but also served as the Director of the program. In 1992, she moved from Texas to Massachusetts where she served as a research physiologist at the US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine. During this assignment, she was primarily involved in studies regarding the fitness, body composition, and nutrition of the active duty soldier. Following her retirement from the US Army in 1994, Dr. Westphal was on the faculty of the Physical Therapy Department at Eastern Washington University where she taught anatomy, exercise physiology, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. While in Spokane, she also served as an adjunct professor at Gonzaga University where she taught exercise physiology. From Spokane she moved to Nashville, Tennessee where she was an associate professor in the School of Physical Therapy at Belmont university and taught physiology, cardiopulmonary physical therapy, health and wellness, and assisted with a foundations course from 1997-2003. In 2003, Dr. Westphal returned to her home state of Montana to teach in the Division of Biological Sciences at the University of Montana in Missoula. Dr. Westphal is a member of the APTA and previously served as a site team member for the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education.
